DELHI LAUNCHES ‘WATER ATM’ INITIATIVE AMID RISING HEATWAVE AND WATER SHORTAGE CONCERNS

Delhi , India :

In a decisive move to tackle the growing challenges posed by the ongoing heatwave and water scarcity, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the launch of an innovative ‘Water ATM’ initiative aimed at providing accessible and purified drinking water to the public.

Addressing the situation, the Chief Minister highlighted the increasing hardships faced by residents as temperatures continue to soar across the country. She stated that with the intensifying heatwave, water shortages have become a serious concern, affecting daily life and basic necessities for many people. The initiative is being seen as a timely intervention to ease the burden on citizens struggling to access clean drinking water.

Explaining the concept, Rekha Gupta said that the Water ATM is essentially a large Reverse Osmosis plant capable of purifying and supplying up to 2,000 liters of water per hour, ensuring a steady and reliable flow of safe drinking water. These units are expected to be installed in key areas to maximize accessibility, especially in regions facing acute shortages.

The introduction of this system reflects a broader effort by the administration to adopt practical and scalable solutions in response to climate-driven challenges. The initiative aims to provide immediate relief while also strengthening long-term water management strategies in the capital.

Officials believe that such infrastructure will play a crucial role in maintaining public health during extreme weather conditions, where access to clean water becomes even more critical. The Water ATM model is also expected to reduce dependency on irregular supply sources and minimize the risks associated with contaminated water.

The move underscores the government’s focus on innovation and public welfare, particularly during times of environmental stress and rising temperatures. By combining technology with accessibility, the initiative seeks to ensure that no citizen is deprived of a basic necessity like clean drinking water.

As Delhi continues to grapple with the dual challenges of heatwaves and water scarcity, the success of the Water ATM initiative will be closely observed, potentially serving as a model for other cities facing similar conditions.
