Amid intensifying political developments in the national capital, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh has taken a strong legal and political stand over reports of defection involving party leaders. Addressing the media in Delhi, Singh announced that he has formally approached the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and the Vice President of India, seeking disqualification of certain members under constitutional provisions.
The move comes in the backdrop of reports suggesting that two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs could merge with another political party. Responding to this, Sanjay Singh stated that he has filed a petition demanding the immediate termination of the membership of seven MPs, invoking the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with anti-defection laws.
“After consulting with experts and seeking legal opinion, I have sent a petition requesting that the membership of these members be completely terminated,” Singh said, emphasizing that the matter has a clear constitutional basis. He further urged the Chairman to take up the issue at the earliest and deliver a fair and just decision.
Singh highlighted that there are several precedents set by the Supreme Court on similar matters, reinforcing his confidence in the legal process. He made it clear that the party is prepared to pursue the matter through all legal avenues, stating, “We will fight the legal battle.” His remarks indicate that the issue could soon escalate into a significant constitutional and judicial debate.
Alongside the legal action, Singh also addressed rumours circulating about internal dissent within the party, particularly claims that several Punjab MLAs are in contact with AAP leader Raghav Chadha. He categorically denied these allegations, calling them misleading and politically motivated.
Rejecting the claims, Singh said that such reports are nothing but false propaganda aimed at creating confusion among the public and party workers. He alleged that these narratives are being deliberately spread to weaken the party’s image and disrupt its internal unity.
He further stated that the leaders accused of betrayal are already facing public backlash in Punjab. “People are on the streets, raising slogans against them. Public sentiment is clearly against those who have betrayed the party and the state,” he said, pointing to growing discontent among supporters.
According to Singh, the alleged defectors are likely to face disqualification soon, which, in his view, undermines the credibility of any claims regarding new alliances or support. He questioned the logic behind the rumours, stating that no MLA would align with individuals whose membership is under threat.
