Piyush Goyal Attacks AAP After Rajya Sabha MPs Switch to BJP, Alleges Corruption and Governance Failures

Date:

AGRA, UTTAR PRADESH — Union Minister Piyush Goyal on April 26 launched a strong political attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following the defection of several of its Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging widespread corruption and a departure from the party’s original ideals.

Speaking in Agra, Goyal said that the decision of leaders, including Raghav Chadha and others, to leave the party reflects growing dissatisfaction within AAP. He claimed that both the people of Delhi and Punjab have faced difficulties under AAP’s governance.

“Be it the people of Delhi or of Punjab, AAP troubled both of them,” Goyal said, adding that the level of corruption allegedly witnessed during AAP’s tenure in both regions was unprecedented and unacceptable to the public.

He further argued that the recent political developments indicate that several leaders within AAP believe the party has lost its core values and founding principles, particularly those related to transparency and anti-corruption. According to him, a “corrupt circle” has formed around AAP leadership, leading to disillusionment among party members.

Goyal also directly targeted AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of ignoring the aspirations and expectations of the people. He alleged that Kejriwal, who once positioned himself as an anti-corruption crusader, has now become a symbol of corruption and misgovernance.

The Union Minister suggested that the recent defections may not be the end of the political shift, indicating that more leaders could leave AAP in the coming days. He described the developments as part of a broader trend reflecting internal dissatisfaction and weakening organisational cohesion within the party.

According to Goyal, the BJP’s growing appeal lies in its focus on governance, development, and strong leadership. He implied that leaders joining the BJP see greater opportunities to contribute to public service and national development under its platform.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following the reported merger of a significant number of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs with the BJP. The move has sparked intense debate, with both parties presenting contrasting narratives.

While the BJP has framed the defections as a result of ideological alignment and dissatisfaction with AAP’s functioning, the Aam Aadmi Party has strongly criticised the developments, calling them politically motivated and alleging external pressure.

Political analysts note that such statements are part of a broader strategy by the BJP to consolidate its position by highlighting perceived weaknesses in opposition parties. At the same time, they point out that defections of this scale can have significant implications for parliamentary dynamics and party morale.

The political discourse surrounding AAP has intensified in recent weeks, with multiple leaders raising questions about governance, internal structure, and adherence to founding principles. The BJP has consistently used these issues to challenge AAP’s credibility.

Meanwhile, AAP leaders have defended their record, emphasising achievements in sectors such as education, healthcare, and public services, while dismissing corruption allegations as baseless.

Goyal’s remarks also reflect the broader political contest between the BJP and AAP, particularly in states like Delhi and Punjab, where both parties have significant stakes.

He concluded by reiterating that public trust is central to governance and that any deviation from promised ideals will eventually be rejected by both leaders and citizens.

The comments underscore the intensifying political battle between the BJP and AAP, with allegations of corruption, governance failures, and ideological drift shaping the narrative ahead of upcoming political engagements.
