Delhi: The Delhi government has started a trial run of hydrogen-powered buses to promote clean energy public transport. The initiative, introduced by the Delhi Transport Department Working with the central agencies and energy partners, this project aims to reduce air pollution and test if hydrogen is a good fuel option for city buses. This initiative is a major step toward reducing harmful emissions and moving toward cleaner transportation in the capital
Officials said the newly introduced hydrogen buses will operate on designated shuttle routes within Delhi, serving high-density travel corridors. The introduction of these buses forms part of a broader strategy to diversify the city’s public transport fleet beyond electric and CNG-based vehicles. Authorities stated that hydrogen technology has been selected due to its potential to produce zero tailpipe emissions, with water vapour as the only by-product.
The launch was carried out as part of a pilot deployment phase, during which performance, efficiency, safety and operational feasibility will be monitored. Transport officials noted that data collected from this phase will be used to determine whether hydrogen-powered buses can be expanded across additional routes in the future.
Operational Structure and Technical Details
According to transport department officials, the hydrogen-fuelled shuttle buses will operate on fixed routes within Delhi, focusing on areas with high commuter demand. The buses are equipped with hydrogen fuel cell technology, which generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, powering the vehicle’s electric motor.
Authorities confirmed that refuelling infrastructure has been set up in coordination with energy partners to support uninterrupted operations during the trial phase. Safety protocols have been implemented in accordance with national and international hydrogen transport standards.
The transport department stated that drivers and operational staff have undergone specialised training to handle hydrogen-powered vehicles and related safety systems. Officials also said that performance data such as fuel efficiency, maintenance requirements and operational cost will be closely reviewed.
Green Mobility Drive and Expected Results
The introduction of hydrogen buses is part of Delhi’s broader clean mobility roadmap, which includes expansion of electric buses, CNG fleets and other low-emission transport systems. Officials said the hydrogen pilot project is expected to provide insights into long-term scalability and cost-effectiveness.
Transport experts noted that if successful, hydrogen fuel technology could complement existing electric vehicle infrastructure and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels in public transport. The initiative is also expected to contribute to efforts aimed at improving air quality in Delhi, which frequently records high levels of pollution, particularly during winter months.
Authorities stated that public response, operational performance and environmental impact will be key factors in deciding future expansion. The pilot programme will continue under continuous monitoring, with periodic reviews planned to assess its viability for wider deployment across the city’s transport network.
