NEW DELHI — Delhi BJP State President Virendraa Sachdeva on Thursday escalated the political confrontation with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), targeting its national convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the ongoing “Sheesh Mahal” controversy related to his official residence.
Addressing the media in the national capital, Sachdeva alleged that recent discussions and visuals associated with Kejriwal’s residence indicate a preference for luxury that contradicts the image of simplicity often projected by the AAP leadership. He said that the issue is not merely political but raises serious questions about accountability, transparency, and the use of public funds.
Referring to statements made by senior AAP leaders, including Sanjay Singh and Atishi, Sachdeva challenged their claim that the images being circulated were downloaded from the internet. He asserted that the visuals closely resemble the actual furnishings used in Kejriwal’s residence.
“I would like to challenge them. The picture is a replica of the furniture used in Kejriwal’s house, and those furnishings are even better than the pictures,” Sachdeva said, suggesting that the actual interiors may be more lavish than what has been publicly portrayed.
He argued that such allegations cannot be dismissed lightly, as they concern the use of taxpayer money and the standards expected from public representatives. According to him, the people of Delhi deserve clarity on how official residences are maintained and whether expenditures are justified.
Sachdeva further accused the AAP of attempting to divert attention from the core issue by questioning the authenticity of the images rather than addressing the concerns directly. He said that instead of offering explanations, the party has chosen to dismiss the matter, which, in his view, raises further doubts.
The BJP leader emphasised that the controversy is symbolic of a larger issue—whether political leaders adhere to the principles they publicly advocate. He suggested that any perceived gap between public messaging and actual conduct can erode trust among citizens.
The “Sheesh Mahal” issue has become a significant flashpoint in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party. While the BJP has consistently raised concerns about alleged extravagance, AAP leaders have rejected the accusations, calling them politically motivated and misleading.
Political observers note that controversies surrounding official residences often gain traction because they resonate with broader public concerns about governance, integrity, and responsible use of resources. In this case, the debate has extended beyond political circles, drawing attention on social media platforms as well.
Sachdeva reiterated that the BJP will continue to press for answers, stating that transparency is a fundamental requirement in a democratic system. He added that elected representatives must be accountable to the public and should be willing to address questions regarding their actions.
He also hinted that the party may escalate the issue further if satisfactory responses are not provided, indicating that it could become a larger political and administrative matter in the coming days.
Meanwhile, AAP leaders have maintained their stance, asserting that the allegations are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the party’s image. They have highlighted their governance record and dismissed the controversy as a distraction from substantive issues.
The ongoing exchange underscores the intense political competition in Delhi, where both parties are seeking to shape public perception and consolidate their support base.
Sachdeva concluded by reiterating his challenge to AAP leaders to substantiate their claims, stating that the truth must be presented transparently before the public.
The controversy continues to fuel political debate in the capital, with issues of accountability, public expenditure, and political credibility remaining at the centre of the discourse.
