Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday highlighted the contributions of social reformer Jyotiba Phule on the occasion of his 200th birth anniversary, calling it a moment of national pride and reflection.

Speaking in Delhi, Meghwal emphasized the significance of Phule’s work in social reform, education, and empowerment. “It is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule today. This is a very important occasion as it is the 200th,” he said, noting that the milestone is being marked across the country.

He recalled Phule’s efforts in promoting truth and equality through the establishment of the Satyashodhak Samaj. “He had established Satyashodhak Samaj, so truth was important for him,” Meghwal stated, highlighting the reformer’s commitment to social justice and the upliftment of marginalized communities.

The Union Minister also underscored Phule’s pioneering role in advancing women’s empowerment and education during a time when such initiatives were rare. “Women empowerment was also important to him. He promoted women’s education,” he said.

Referring to Savitribai Phule, Meghwal pointed out her historic contribution as India’s first woman teacher. “The nation takes pride in Savitribai Phule being the first woman teacher of the country,” he said, adding that her journey was made possible through Jyotiba Phule’s support and vision.

He further elaborated on Phule’s progressive approach, stating, “This too was done by Mahatma Phule—to get her education after marriage and then permitting her to open a school, doing such a big work in women’s education.”

The government and various organisations across the country are commemorating the 200th birth anniversary with events, tributes, and programmes aimed at remembering Phule’s legacy and contributions to Indian society.

“The nation is celebrating his 200th anniversary today and bowing before him,” Meghwal added, underlining the enduring relevance of Phule’s ideas in contemporary India.

Jyotiba Phule is widely regarded as one of the foremost social reformers in India, known for his work in eradicating caste-based discrimination, promoting education for women and the underprivileged, and advocating equality and social justice.

The occasion serves as a reminder of his lasting impact on Indian society and the continued importance of his vision for inclusive development and empowerment.
