In a major infrastructure push aimed at reducing chronic traffic congestion in South Delhi, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started work on a large-scale elevated corridor project connecting Saket, Sangam Vihar, Khanpur, Pul Prahladpur and Badarpur.
The ambitious project, estimated to cost around ₹1,471 crore, will include elevated roads, underpasses, subways and redesigned road stretches to improve connectivity and decongest the heavily crowded Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road corridor.
Major Relief Expected for South Delhi Commuters
The project is being planned to reduce traffic pressure on MB Road, one of the busiest arterial roads in South Delhi that connects residential and commercial hubs with Faridabad and other NCR regions.
According to officials, daily traffic congestion in areas like Sangam Vihar, Khanpur, Saket and Pul Prahladpur has worsened over the years due to rapid urbanisation, roadside parking and increasing vehicle density.
Under the proposed plan:
- A nearly 5-km elevated corridor will be built from Sangam Vihar to Maa Anandmayee Marg
- Another 1.1-km elevated stretch is proposed from Pul Prahladpur towards Badarpur
- Road redesign and traffic management upgrades will be carried out between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Pul Prahladpur
- New underpasses, ramps, tunnels and pedestrian facilities will also be developed
DPR and Feasibility Study Underway
DMRC has reportedly started the feasibility study and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is expected to be completed within the next four months. The consultancy cost for DPR preparation has been estimated at around ₹1.47 crore.
Officials said the project will be integrated with existing and upcoming Delhi Metro infrastructure to minimise land acquisition and optimise urban space usage. Parts of the corridor are expected to align with the Phase-IV expansion of the Delhi Metro network, including the proposed Golden Line corridor.
Focus on Signal-Free Connectivity
Transport planners say the project is designed to provide smoother, signal-free traffic movement across one of Delhi’s most congested stretches. The corridor is expected to reduce travel time, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions while improving connectivity between South Delhi and NCR regions.
Urban experts also believe the project could improve access to rapidly growing residential pockets such as Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar, where commuters often face severe bottlenecks during peak hours.
Environmental and Infrastructure Assessment Planned
DMRC officials have stated that traffic surveys, parking studies, road safety audits and commuter movement analysis will be conducted as part of the planning process. Authorities will also assess:
- Land acquisition requirements
- Environmental impact
- Tree transplantation needs
- Coordination with multiple civic agencies
The Delhi government had approved the project earlier this year as part of its broader infrastructure and decongestion strategy for the capital.
Delhi’s Infrastructure Push Continues
The elevated corridor project is part of a wider urban mobility overhaul underway in Delhi-NCR, including expressways, ring roads, metro expansion and rapid rail systems aimed at tackling worsening traffic congestion and improving regional connectivity.
