New Delhi: The Delhi Metro (DMRC) has decided to increase its number of trains starting Monday to encourage people to ditch their cars and travel by metro. Starting May 18, 2026, 24 new trips will be added every Monday on various metro routes, with six additional trains deployed. Officials say that if needed and crowds remain high, the number of trips may be increased on other days of the week as well.
The decision comes as part of a wider effort to promote fuel conservation, reduce traffic congestion, and tackle rising pollution levels in the national capital. Authorities expect a significant increase in Metro ridership as the Delhi government continues to push residents toward sustainable and eco-friendly commuting options.
The initiative is linked to the Delhi government’s ongoing “Metro Monday” campaign under the “Mera Bharat Mera Yogdan” programme. As part of the campaign, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and several cabinet ministers recently travelled by Metro to encourage citizens to rely more on public transportation instead of private vehicles. Government departments have also been advised to adopt measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption.
To manage the expected rise in commuters, DMRC is strengthening passenger facilities and station management. Additional security personnel will be deployed at busy stations, while extra ticket counters, baggage scanners, and Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) will also be activated to ensure smooth movement during peak hours. Officials said crowd management arrangements have been upgraded to avoid congestion and reduce waiting time for passengers.
DMRC further stated that last-mile connectivity services are now available at nearly 160 Metro stations, benefiting around one lakh commuters every day. These services include e-rickshaws, e-autos, bike taxis, cab aggregators, and bicycle rental systems to make Metro travel more accessible and convenient.
Park and Ride facilities have been launched at 126 metro stations in Delhi-NCR. This means you can park your vehicle in the station parking lot and then easily travel by metro. Officials believe this will reduce traffic congestion, ease traffic jams, and reduce pollution.
