Date:

NEW DELHI, INDIA — Union Minister of State S P Singh Baghel responded to remarks by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asserting that the Women’s Reservation initiative is aimed at ensuring rightful representation rather than serving any political agenda.

Speaking in Delhi, Baghel said that the move is not driven by vote bank considerations or appeasement politics, but is focused on providing women with their due rights and opportunities in governance. He emphasized that the initiative reflects a long-standing demand for greater participation of women in legislative bodies.

The minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking decisive action on the issue, stating that the leadership has delivered on a reform that had been awaited for decades. According to him, the step marks a significant milestone in strengthening democratic representation in the country.

Baghel further noted that women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies will enable broader inclusion in decision-making processes, allowing women to raise issues that directly impact their lives and communities. He described the move as a transformative reform that aligns with the vision of inclusive development.

The comments come amid ongoing political debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill and its implementation, with leaders from different parties expressing varied perspectives. While some opposition voices have raised concerns over timing and process, the government has maintained that the initiative is a historic and necessary step forward.

Baghel reiterated that the focus should remain on empowering women and ensuring equitable participation, rather than politicizing the issue. He added that the reform is expected to have a lasting impact on governance and policy outcomes by bringing diverse voices into the legislative framework.

His remarks reflect the government’s position that the Women’s Reservation initiative is a landmark reform aimed at strengthening democracy through greater inclusion, even as political debate around the issue continues.
