“Ceasefire Welcome, But Challenges Remain”: Expert on Iran Deal and Global Reactions…

Amid ongoing developments in West Asia, foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev has described the reported Iran ceasefire understanding as a positive step, while cautioning that several complexities still surround the agreement.

Speaking in New Delhi, Sachdev said, “The ceasefire is absolutely welcome,” highlighting that any move towards de-escalation in the region is a relief given the intensity of recent tensions.

However, he also pointed to controversial remarks made earlier by Donald Trump, noting that they drew significant criticism. He referred to Trump’s statement suggesting that an entire civilisation could be wiped out, calling it an extreme position that was even criticised by members of his own Republican Party.

Sachdev further noted that global voices, including Pope Francis, also reacted strongly. The Pope reportedly remarked that such rhetoric does not align with Christian values, adding moral weight to the criticism of escalatory language.

Discussing the structure of the proposed agreement, Sachdev observed that the negotiation points appear to be heavily tilted. “The 10 points on which discussion would happen are all maximalist points by Iran,” he said, suggesting that the demands could make negotiations more challenging.

He also highlighted the role of regional players, stating that Pakistan played an important role in facilitating the agreement, indicating a broader diplomatic involvement beyond the primary parties.

At the same time, Sachdev acknowledged that several objectives remain unfulfilled, pointing to gaps that could affect the long-term sustainability of the ceasefire. The agreement, he noted, is not limited to one dimension but extends to multiple actors in the region.

“This agreement talks about Hezbollah and Lebanon, and other allied countries. It’s a comprehensive agreement,” he explained, underlining the wide scope of the deal and its potential implications for regional stability.

The ceasefire understanding comes at a critical moment, as global stakeholders continue to monitor the evolving situation closely. While it offers hope for reduced hostilities, experts believe that sustained dialogue and balanced negotiations will be essential to ensure lasting peace.

Sachdev’s assessment reflects cautious optimism—welcoming the ceasefire while recognizing the complex geopolitical realities that will shape its outcome.
