Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh : India marked a significant milestone in its defence and strategic capabilities with the commissioning of its indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine INS Aridhaman into the Indian Navy. The submarine was formally inducted in Visakhapatnam in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, signaling a major advancement in the nation’s maritime strength and nuclear deterrence framework.

INS Aridhaman, a 7,000-tonne Arihant-class submarine, enters service after undergoing extensive sea trials. Designed with a strong emphasis on indigenous technology, the vessel reportedly incorporates over 80 percent domestic content, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in critical defence manufacturing.

The induction of INS Aridhaman significantly reinforces India’s nuclear triad, enhancing its second-strike capability and strategic deterrence posture. Equipped with K-15 and K-4 ballistic missiles, the submarine provides a crucial sea-based nuclear deterrent, ensuring credible and survivable response capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges.

The commissioning marks the addition of the third operational nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine to India’s fleet, further strengthening maritime defence preparedness. This development is being viewed as a decisive step towards securing India’s long-term strategic interests and maintaining stability in the region.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored the significance of the occasion, emphasizing the power and symbolism associated with the submarine. His message reflected the strength and capability embodied by INS Aridhaman, highlighting its role as a formidable asset in India’s defence arsenal.

The event in Visakhapatnam also witnessed the induction of the stealth frigate INS Taragiri, further boosting naval capabilities. The addition of advanced warships alongside the submarine reflects a broader push towards modernization and expansion of the naval fleet.

The commissioning of these platforms underscores India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence production and advancing indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. It also highlights the country’s focus on enhancing technological sophistication and operational readiness across its armed forces.

INS Aridhaman’s entry into service comes at a time when maritime security and strategic deterrence have gained increased importance. With its advanced missile systems and stealth capabilities, the submarine is expected to play a pivotal role in safeguarding national interests and ensuring maritime dominance.

The successful induction of the submarine also demonstrates the effectiveness of India’s long-term investment in defence research, development, and manufacturing. It reflects a broader vision of building a robust and resilient defence ecosystem capable of meeting future challenges.

As India continues to expand its naval capabilities, the addition of INS Aridhaman represents not just a technological achievement, but a strategic assertion of strength and preparedness. The development stands as a testament to the nation’s growing confidence and capability in securing its borders and projecting power across the seas.
